Accessibility

Built to be used by everyone.

Draft — pending review. This statement is a working draft. The substance reflects current practice; specifics around testing cadence, audits, and remediation timelines may be revised before final publication. To report an accessibility barrier today, email director@compassioncare.org.

We work to make compassioncare.org usable for visitors with vision, hearing, motor, or cognitive disabilities. If something isn't working for you, tell us — we'll fix it.

Our commitment

House of Compassion aims to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA standard. We treat accessibility as part of good design, not a checkbox at the end.

What we've done

  • Semantic structure — every page uses a clear heading hierarchy (one H1, logical H2/H3), proper landmarks (header, nav, main, footer), and meaningful link text.
  • Keyboard navigation — every interactive element is reachable with Tab, and a skip-to-content link appears when you tab into the page.
  • Screen-reader support — form fields have labels, images have descriptive alternative text (or are explicitly marked decorative), and dynamic status messages are announced via ARIA live regions.
  • Color contrast — body text and interactive elements meet or exceed the WCAG AA 4.5:1 contrast ratio against the page background.
  • Resizable text — the layout uses relative units (rem/em/clamp), so browser zoom and OS-level text sizing both work without breaking the design.
  • Mobile and touch — interactive controls meet a 44×44px minimum touch target where practical, and form inputs use 16px text to prevent iOS auto-zoom.
  • Reduced motion — animations are subtle and respect the user's OS-level “reduce motion” preference.

Known limitations

We're honest about where we're still working:

  • Third-party donation widget. The donation forms and buttons on /get-involved are provided by Givebutter and render inside their own component. We've verified they are keyboard-accessible and screen-reader friendly, but we don't control their internal markup. If you hit a barrier in the donation flow, call 816-761-CARE and we'll process your gift with you directly.
  • Photography placeholders. A handful of photo bands across the site are currently styled placeholders pending finished photography. They are marked aria-hidden so screen readers skip them.
  • Older PDF documents linked from the site (annual reports, forms) may not meet the same standard as the website itself. We're working to remediate them. Email us and we'll send you an accessible alternative.

How we test

We test with the keyboard alone, with VoiceOver on macOS/iOS and NVDA on Windows, with browser zoom up to 200%, and with automated tools (axe DevTools, Lighthouse) before each release. Real users tell us more than tools do — so we take feedback seriously.
